Hikkaduwa National Park: Sri Lanka’s Vibrant Underwater Paradise

Hikkaduwa National Park, located in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, is one of the country's three marine national parks. Known for its vibrant coral reefs and rich marine biodiversity, this national park is a haven for nature enthusiasts and underwater explorers. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1979 and upgraded to a national park in 2002, Hikkaduwa is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the wonders of the ocean.

The Coral Reef: A Natural Marvel

The coral reef at Hikkaduwa is a shallow fringing reef with an average depth of 5 meters (16 feet). Stretching over 4 kilometers along the coast, it not only reduces coastal erosion but also acts as a natural breakwater. The reef is home to over 60 species of coral, including staghorn, elkhorn, brain, and star corals, along with the endemic Porites desilveri. These vibrant coral formations support a diverse ecosystem of over 170 species of reef fish, crabs, prawns, sea turtles, and even blacktip reef sharks.

Marine Life Highlights

The park’s underwater habitats are a sanctuary for various marine creatures:

  • Endemic Reef Fish: Species such as Chlorurus rhakoura and Pomacentrus proteus are unique to Sri Lanka.
  • Threatened Sea Turtles: Hawksbill, green, and olive ridley turtles visit the reef regularly.
  • Seagrass Meadows: Providing a habitat for dugongs and feeding grounds for prawns, the seagrass beds are essential to the park's ecosystem.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Hikkaduwa National Park is during the inter-monsoon dry seasons, typically from March to April and September to November. During this period, the calm, clear waters provide ideal conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Challenges and Conservation Efforts

Despite its protected status, Hikkaduwa National Park faces challenges such as coral bleaching, overfishing, and pollution. Notable events like the 1998 El Niño significantly degraded the reef’s live coral cover, which dropped from 47% to just 13%. Conservation groups continue to work tirelessly to restore and protect this fragile ecosystem.
