Walakkandi-Exploring Sea Snake Encounters on the Western Coast of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's western coastal areas, rich with marine biodiversity, offer unique experiences but sometimes involve encounters with sea snakes. Areas like Negombo and Puttalam, especially active with fishing communities, have occasionally reported sea snake bites. Though interactions are infrequent, they can pose risks, emphasizing the importance of awareness and preparedness for those engaged in fishing and other water activities.

One study (de Silva, Ukuwela & Sanders, unpublished) documented over 11 cases of sea snake bites on the west coast, including some with severe symptoms. Hospitals in Negombo and Puttalam have handled a mix of dry bites, where no venom is injected, and cases involving different types of venom.

The venom of sea snakes is primarily neurotoxic, which targets the nervous system and can cause muscle weakness, paralysis, or respiratory issues. Some sea snakes also produce myotoxic venom, affecting muscle tissue and potentially leading to severe muscle pain and damage. These venom types can result in various clinical symptoms depending on the amount of venom injected and individual factors of each bite.

For example, a documented incident in 2013 involved a fisherman who was bitten while sorting prawns in Negombo's lagoon. In such cases, the quick identification of venom type and medical response are crucial to prevent complications.

Researchers also observed cultural beliefs and practices related to sea snake encounters within these coastal communities, offering valuable insights into how they approach safety and response to such incidents.
